Amazing Underground Cemeteries of Rome

Amazing Underground Cemeteries of Rome

Although these undergrounds are easily reached on private tours of Rome, they have a certain way of making one feel a million miles from anywhere at all. Created during the second century, these undergrounds were used as cemeteries mostly by Christians, who were then free to pay their respects in private without having any concerns for Roman laws restricting them from doing so.

Roman Catacombs

Catacomb” is the name give to these underground cemeteries and due to the fact that burials were not allowed in Rome during this time, the catacombs are immense in size, stretching for miles on the edge of the city, most of which can be found on the Appian Way.

Catacomb of Callixtus, Roman Catacombs

St Sebastian and St Callixtus on the Appian Way are amongst the most popular catacombs to visit, while St Agnes, Priscilla and Domitilla are a little further away. Regardless of which one you choose to visit, it can be a little tiresome figuring out how to reach each one and for this reason alone, a private tour of the Roman Catacombs is ideal, not to mention the fact that you will have a much better insight into this attraction with the assistance of a private guide.
