The Ancient Holy City of Hierapolis on an Archaeological Tour in Turkey

Located about 20 km north of Denizli, Hierapolis is named a Holy City in Archeological literature because there were numerous temples and religious buildings found here. The ancient city of Hierapolis is situated between many historical areas, and according to the ancient geographers, Ptolemaios and Strabon, Hierapolis was very close to Laodicea and Tripolis which was in Kario's Border which is why it was a Phrygian City and can be seen on a Hierapolis tour. There is no information to found about Hierapolis' history before the Hellenistic Era, but we know there was a city there before then. The name Hierapolis is given because of its Mother goddess Cult.   Read More...

The Ancient Holy City of Hierapolis on an Archaeological Tour in Turkey

Information about Hierapolis is minimal on Hierapolis tours, but it is recorded that the king Eumenes II of Pergamum, founded the city in 190 BC and was named Hierapolis after the Amazon's Queen Hiera who was the wife of Telephos, the founder of Pergamum. The earthquake in 60 A.D. destroyed Hierapolis during the time of Roman Emperor Nero, and during the reconstruction, the city lost its Hellenistic Style and became a standard Roman City. Right after the Roman period began, Hierapolis became an important centre because of its financial and religious position. In 80 A.D. St. Philip came to Hierapolis and was then murdered by the Jewish inhabitants and the Turks gained control of Hierapolis at the end of the 12th century A.D.

Tour the ancient city of Hierapolis which is divided by the main street which is about 1 km long with columnar governmental galleries on both sides. The South Byzantine Gate in the south of the city is dated at 5 A.D, and the well-preserved North Gate has two round towers and inscriptions in Greek and Latin honouring Emperor Domitian. You will also find the Apollan temple situated in a sacred cave, which is called Plutonium. The temple's foundation is dated back to the late Hellenistic Period, but the remainder of the temple is dated as far back as the 3rd century A.D.

The Middle Age (Selcuklu) Fortress found on the plateau and consists of a full rampart system on a strategical position. The walls were built with marble blocks from the ruins and contained inscriptions. According to its material the fortress dated back to the 9th and 13th century when there were conflicts between Byzantine and Selcuk.

You will find a large, well-preserved Greek-style theatre building on the hillside and stands at 91 meters high while on Hierapolis ancient city tours. The theatre's construction began in 62 A.D, but it was not completed in the Hadrian era and was finally completed in the Severus Era in 206 A.D and is separated into 7 parts by 8 steps, with around 50 seats before reaching the Diozoma (a kind of passage) in the middle of the cavea. 10 columns are standing in front of the kingdom and orchestra box, which are 3.66 meters high. The front door has 5 gates and 6 niches which are behind the columns and decorated with oyster shells.

Apart from the travertine area on the west, the other sides of the city are necropolis areas which can be viewed on the roads going to Laodicea on the south and Tripolis - Sardis on the north. The north Necropolis spans from the time of the Late Hellenistic era to the early Christian period with sarcophagi, house-type cemeteries, tumulus-type cemeteries, and monuments.

With a Hierapolis private tour, you will also see the ancient bath complex where some of the walls and vaults of the bath and are still standing. There is a large courtyard at the entrance, large halls on both sides, a rectangular enclosed area, and the actual bathing area.
