A Delightful Mix of Medieval and Modern History With a Tour of Simena

Simena is a top-rated Lycian site, situated upon one of the most beautiful spots of the Turkish coast where many people take Simena tours. The name "Kekova" meaning "plain of thyme" describes the region surrounding the island of Kekova, the villages of  Üçağiz and Kaleköy and the three ancient towns of Simena, Teimussa and Tersane (meaning shipyard), as the bay was the site of an ancient shipyard, with consisted of mostly Byzantine ruins. Both Simena and Teimussa have an extensive necropolis.  Teimussa is now the village of Üçağiz, where many boats set off for daily tours to Simena.  Read More...

A Delightful Mix of Medieval and Modern History With a Tour of Simena

The Kekova region is a specially protected area in 1990 to preserve the geographic, natural, cultural and richness of Kekova Island and the surrounding coast. The Kekova protected area is 260 km² and is managed by the Ministry of Environment, Authority for the Protection of Special Areas. Kekova-Simena is an enjoyable place to visit Simena village tour for its exceptional charm and beauty. because of this, it is popular with yachties (known to them as "Kekova Roads") on their Blue Cruises along Lycia's Turquoise Coast. Cruising yachts anchor here for several weeks at a time. It is a peaceful place of history, beautiful turquoise water, sun, islands, unspoilt nature, blue skies and enjoyable swimming.

The ancient sunken Lycian city of Simena is referred to as Kekova-Simena by the locals. The city is a delightful mix of medieval, ancient and modern history making it beautiful as well as interesting. Simena in ancient times was a small fishing village and later was an outpost of the Knights of Rhodes which was formerly St. John. The ancient city of Simena was made up of two parts, an island and a coastal region of the mainland. On the shore, the charming fishing village of Kaleköy ("castle village") stands today with its buildings mixing with ancient and medieval structures which can be seen on an ancient city tour of Simena. Take a Simena castle tour to the top of the village dominated by a well-preserved castle constructed by the Knights of Rhodes partly on Lycian foundations. Inside the castle, you will find the smallest amphitheatre of Lycia.

Lycian necropolis is located at the eastern end of the village with some very nice sarcophagi that overlook the sea and is also surrounded by ancient olive trees. Close to the harbour of Kaleköy is another sarcophagus, popping up from the water. Across the bay, along the island, you will find half-submerged ruins of the residential part of Simena where terrible earthquakes of the 2nd century AD caused the downward shift of land. Half of the houses are now submerged, and staircases descend into the water. Foundations of buildings and the ancient harbour can also be seen below the sea.
